Trade English refers to the language used in international trade, including business negotiations, contracts, agreements, correspondence, and documents. It is characterized by precise and specific vocabulary, formal tone, and adherence to established conventions and protocols.
Some examples of trade terms and expressions include:
- FOB (Free On Board): a shipping term indicating responsibility for goods passes from seller to buyer when the goods are loaded onto the shipping vessel
- CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight): a shipping term indicating that the seller is responsible for the cost, insurance, and freight of the goods until they are delivered to the buyer's port of destination
- Letter of Credit: a financial document issued
by a bank guaranteeing payment to the seller upon presentation of specified documents
- Bill of Lading: a document that serves as a receipt for goods shipped by sea or inland waterways, specifying the terms of the shipment and the carrier
- Incoterms: a standardized set of trade terms defining the roles and responsibilities of buyers and sellers in international trade transactions.
